Botox® and Dysport®

Smooth fine lines and reduce wrinkles on the forehead and crow’s feet to look and feel more youthful. Slow down and prevent aging. Botox®/Dysport® (also called neurotoxins) can also be used off-label to treat “gummy” smiles, subtly increase lip volume (aka the lip flip), and control underarm perspiration, decrease prominent jaw (masseter) muscles, smooth neck (platysma bands) muscles, and more.

But, how do you know which of the two is best for you? Although both are similar chemically, there are key differences. Bella Viso by Trish will educate you on the differences between Botox® and Dysport® and suggest the best neurotoxin treatment for your needs.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is an FDA-approved neurotoxin that blocks nerve signals to your muscles, creating a softer, more relaxed-looking expression. Botox® does not require downtime, and during the procedure, you may elect to have a topical anesthetic applied at the injection site(s) to make your treatment more comfortable. Botox® can treat fine lines around the eyes, forehead lines, and between the brows. The number of units depends on the severity of the wrinkles and the location you wish to have treated. Botox® is a short-term solution to wrinkles, and the results last 3-4 months. However, some patients can go as long as 4-6 months before re-treatment is needed.

What is Dysport®?

Like Botox®, Dysport® is developed from the same botulinum toxin and works by temporarily diminishing (paralyzing) muscle movement. As these muscles relax from the Dysport®, the wrinkles will minimize. Dysport® is used to treat moderate to severe wrinkles, such as the deep lines between the eyebrows. Dysport® is injected under the skin to help maintain a smooth look, and results can last between 3 and 4 months. Dysport® also does not require downtime, and during the procedure, you may elect to have a topical anesthetic applied at the injection site(s) to make your treatment more comfortable.

There are some key differences between Botox® and Dysport®:

  • Dosage: Botox® and Dysport® are sold by the unit, and the dosage is different. Dysport® offers a higher dosage, as 2.5 units of Dysport® equals one unit of Botox®.

  • Onset: The results of Dysport® can be seen within 24 hours, and Botox® will take around 72 hours.

  • Cost: Botox® costs more than Dysport® because of its heavier concentration. However, more Dysport® is needed to achieve similar results.

  • Results: Like Botox®, Dysport® results can last 3-4 months or longer with some patients.

The most common side effects of Botox® include redness, swelling around the injection site, and the potential for bruising. These side effects resolve on their own without further problems.
